Steel House | University of Idaho

Architect

Thanks to the article about Steel House on the UI web page, we were contacted by two UI architecture graduates who have offered to assist us with architectural planning and preliminary design of a new house on a pro bono basis. Don't you just love those Vandal connections! We have also identified several possible locations for a new house, and are working to pin down the best one. We have chosen Dave Eckes, a U of I graduate, to be the architect for our new building project. Rachel and Stacey Stemach have joined the board and will act as consultants in the area of architectural design and work with us through a building project. Our hope is to build “green.” Dave, Stacey, and Rachel all have experience with “green” building. We are honored to have all three of them working with us on a future building project!

Starting in fall 2010, the University requires that all freshmen live on campus. Living in Steel House qualifies for “living on campus.” A U of I female student can now choose between Steel House, the dorms, or a sorority.

Campus housing has become a valuable commodity. Since our lease for the house on Idaho Avenue house is up soon, it's important that we start now in determining an alternative. Working with our architect partners, members of the Steel House Board and current residents of the House, are providing ideas on design elements both inside and out and on the best location to build. The architects presented a plan to us during our Steel House reunion on April 24. Those drawings will be available on the web site when they are more complete.
